Freshman FAQ's

Students and Parents/Guardians

Please share this with your parent/guardian and keep for reference throughout the school year.

Please familiarize yourself and share with your parent/guardian the PCL website.  You can access this by going to Wilson’s website – Activities – Athletics and click on PIERCE COUNTY LEAGUE WEBSITE.  Then click on the Wilson “W”.  This is the website that our Athletic Director (AD) uses to communicate sports related information.  Athletic Clearance, schedules, try out information, will all be located here. Also, on this page, is important information about Final Forms Athletic Registration. Final Forms must be completed by both the student and the parent to compete each sport session. Athletic Clearance is a term that will be new to you.  You must get cleared through the AD’s office to participate in sports at Wilson.  This is done prior to each sports session. Our AD will put the Athletic Clearance dates and times on the PCL website.  Come during the posted clearance dates/times to meet with the AD.  If you come during non-posted dates/time, there is no guarantee the AD will be on campus to clear you.  Keep in mind, both the AD and the Assistant AD’s schedules are very different than the rest of the staff on campus, they may not always be on campus.  Questions that can’t be answered on the PCL website, can be directed to their email, or

Good attendance is vital to your success at Wilson High School and we want nothing more than for you to be successful while here.  Take a moment and think about how large and unique Wilson’s campus is.  We have 1300 students spread across a 14+ acre campus with several buildings.  Our campus is a “California Style Campus.”  Depending on the class, e.g. Music, PE/Swim, ROTC, it can be extremely difficult to locate students in real time.  Because of how large and vast our campus is, we do attendance a little differently than what you have been accustomed to at middle school.  We want you to feel empowered to be a responsible adult and take ownership of your attendance.  For grades 9-11, you have one dedicated Attendance Secretary, Ms. Ford.  Her email is and her phone number is 253-571-6113. Your Attendance Office is located at the top of the ramp, west of the Main Office doors.  For more on our Attendance Policy, see pages 20-22 in the Student Handbook.

Early Dismissal (ED): On the day of your ED, we need a signed note from your parent/guardian brought to attendance first thing in the morning. Other options, your parent/guardian can email or leave a voicemail first thing in the morning or the night before.  Ms. Ford must have a note, phone call, or email from your parent guardian prior to leaving school for any reason, unless you are being dismissed by the Nurse, otherwise it may be an unexcused absence. Please pick your early dismissal slip up during your lunch time. If you are leaving before your lunch time, Ms. Ford will tell you when to pick you early dismissal slip up. When it’s time for you to leave, show your teacher your ED slip, and go meet your parent/guardian in the Main Office parking lot.  Your parent/guardian does not need to come inside Wilson to get you when it’s time to leave.  They are welcome to meet you in the Attendance Office area, but the above process should have already been completed. The following day, upon your return, bring Ms. Ford your signed yellow ED slip for re-entry into school.

Absent or Tardy: If you are going to be absent/tardy from school, your parent/guardian can either email Ms. Ford or leave a voicemail.  Please provide the parent/guardian name, student’s first and last name with spelling of each, ID# if known, return phone number, and a brief reason for the absent/tardy.  A signed note from your parent/guardian can also be returned upon your arrival back to school.  If you are Tardy to school or class for any reason, you must check-in with the attendance office before going to class.

Sick: If you become sick while you are at school, please do not text your parent/guardian and ask that they come get you.  You can tell your teacher that you are sick and need to go to the Nurse’s Office.  If you need to go home, the Nurse will contact your parent.  When your parent/guardian comes to get you, they can come to the Main Office and tell the Main Office that their student is in the Nurse’s Office.  Becoming sick at school is not an Attendance Office matter, but a Nurse’s Office matter.

Testing and Assembly Days: Please do not text your parent/guardian after a test or before an assembly and ask that they come pick you up from school. Unless it is a TPS District scheduled early release day, the dismissal bell rings at 2:05.

Attendance Corrections: If you were marked absent in a class period, in which you were present or tardy, you must come to the attendance office and get an attendance correction form. Take this form to your teacher to have it completed and your attendance corrected. If you were absent/late to class, due to being with a teacher, counselor, principal, nurse etc. you must get a note from the staff you were with to get your absence/tardy excused. Attendance errors must be corrected by your teacher, counselor, etc. through the above process, not by your parent/guardian.

Bell Schedules

On Wilson’s website,, under the “Resources” tab, you will find our Bell Schedule.  Please note, Wednesdays are “Late Start” AKA “Modified Staff Development Schedule.” An exception to Late Start days will be state testing, finals and first day of school.  Usually, your teachers and/or administrators will communicate if a Wednesday will not be late start.

Important dates for the school district will be available on the district’s website.  A “calendar” link is available on both the parents and the students tab on  A button that says, “More Calendars” is on the top left and provides printable calendars for this and the next school year.

Closed Campus Policy

Just like visitors are not allowed on campus during the school day, students are not allowed to leave campus during the school day without a yellow ED slip.  For more information, including disciplinary action, please see page 15 of the Student Handbook.

Contacting Staff/Classroom Websites

On Wilson’s website, there is a blue banner with an option that says “CONTACT.”  If you click on that link, we have provided all our staff’s emails and phone numbers.  You can reach out to staff directly using either method of contact.  Next to the teacher’s phone number, there is also a link to their classroom website.  Teacher’s often post important information about homework, supplies needed, etc.

Wilson’s top goals are your safety and your education.  We take both extremely seriously.  We strive for limited classroom disruptions.  If you forget items at home and it gets delivered to you at school, you will not be called down from class.  You will have to come to the Main Office during lunch or passing periods (but don’t be late to your next class) to pick up your item.  It is not staff’s responsibility to find you on campus when a delivery has been made.  We ask that you know when something is being dropped off for you.  Most often, the person delivering will shoot the receiver a quick text to let them know it was dropped off in the Main Office.  Then you can come during passing, lunch or after school to pick up your delivery. The following items are not permitted at WHS and will not be given to students during school hours: balloons, cake or any other food related celebratory items, flowers, etc. Birthdays should be celebrated after school hours, and not on Wilson’s campus.  This policy is to support our goal of making sure all Wilson students are healthy, safe and are being provided a conducive learning environment.

Food Delivery Services:  Food, e.g., Uber, Eats, Door Dash, cannot be ordered and delivered to Wilson. It will be refused upon delivery.  This policy is put in place for the health, safety and security of all students.

Dress Code

We want our Rams to be responsible, respectful young adults.  What you wear cannot be offensive, gang related, promote drugs/alcohol, or disrupt the classroom learning environment. The complete dress code policy is located on page 16, in the Student Handbook, located on Wilson’s website.

12th Grade Attendance – Opt. # 3

Guidance/Counselor’s Office - Opt. # 4

Cashier’s Office/Office Coordinator - Opt. #5

Nurse’s Office - Opt. #6

Also, the contact tab in the blue banner of Wilson’s website has a complete staff directory.  You are more than welcome to reach out to staff using their email or direct line.

Leaving Class

Leaving class is not conducive to the learning environment.  We ask that you use your time wisely to take care of business outside of the classroom. The best time to take care of needs is before or after school, or during lunch.  Some examples of things to take care of during your own time, and not during class time are: Making purchases or paying fees, getting a bus pass, asking the Guidance Office if you can make an appointment to see your counselor.

Because of how large and spread out our campus is, you will notice students at Wilson don’t really use lockers.  Students have all their supplies in their backpacks and carry their backpack with them all day.  With that said, you are more than welcome to request a locker. See Ms. Howell in the Main Office for assistance with lockers.

Lunch Money

Another great tool to know about is our nutrition website., or – parents – school meals.  You can load money to your account, check your account balance and set alerts.  This is also where you would apply for free or reduced lunch. It’s a very convenient and informative site!

School Supply List

Wilson does not have a school supply list.  Your teachers will tell you during the first week of school what supplies they want you to have, if any. Students use most often: a backpack, pencils, pens and highlighters.  Students use whatever they prefer for: spiral notebooks, a 3-ring binder with loose leaf paper, or composition notebooks.  If you choose notebooks, you will at least 1 notebook for each class, possibly even a few extras. The Student Store has some basic supplies.

Student Handbook

We do not give hard copies of our handbook.  You can find an electronic version on Wilson’s website under “Resources”.  It is recommended that you and your parent/guardian spend time familiarizing yourself with the Student Handbook.  It is very informative and includes helpful information on things like: The attendance policy, dress code, graduation requirements, bell schedules, clubs and athletics, to name just a few.

Student Store

Wilson has an amazing Student Store.  The Student Store sells spirit wear, snacks, drinks, and some school supplies.  The Student Store is located near the Attendance Office. It is available to you daily during your lunch break only.

Please become familiar with the “BUS ROUTES” section of TPS’ website under the Parent’s section.  There is a lot of great information and tools on this website. This is where you will go to find out if a bus is provided for you, and its route information.    If you are going to take the school bus, you will need to register with Ms. Brooks-Johnson sometime during the first few weeks of school.  Ms. Brooks-Johnson will be available daily in the Main Office, after 12:30. It is OK to begin the school year riding the bus, while you wait to meet with Ms. Brooks-Johnson. If you need to apply for an Orca card, please get an application from the Cashier’s Office or the Main Office on or after the first day of school.

For the safety of staff and students, TPS is a closed campus district.  Visitors are not allowed on campus during school hours, unless they have prior approval from a principal. Non-Wilson students are not permitted on campus during the school day.

We highly recommend that students and their parents/guardians become familiar with Wilson’s website.  It has important and useful information.  The “Contact” tab has every staff member’s phone number and email.  Parents are welcome to contact their student’s teachers and counselor using their direct contact information.   Under the “Resources” tab are important links to other sites.  Bell Schedules, Student Handbook, Counselor’s Office section, our Anti-Bullying Pledge, Lunch Money site, etc.  Also, check out the Programs/Activities menu option.  You can look at Wilson’s clubs and access our Athletics site.

The yearbook class has a helpful website link on Wilson’s website, found under Resources.  Yearbooks can be ordered online, in advance, at  The school cannot order a yearbook for you.  To advance order, please go straight to We do keep a few extras on hand that can be purchased in person, at the cashier’s office, at the very end of the school year.  We highly recommend ordering the yearbook mid-August through September, as that is when the advance payment discount is the biggest.  The longer you wait, the smaller the advance payment discount gets.
