What is Tech4Kids?

Tech4Kids (previously known as Laptops2Kids) is a program through Tacoma Schools and the Foundation for Tacoma Students (Graduate Tacoma). Tech4Kids provides computers to qualifying students, giving them the tools they need to complete their school work, with the goal of graduation. 

How to apply: 

To apply, you will need your student ID number and TPS Password. If you do not know what these are, you may ask in your school office, or check with your teacher.


To qualify, students must be currently attending a school within the Tacoma Public Schools, and qualify for free/reduced lunch or meet the federal poverty guidelines and must not have previously received a laptop. Due to limited supply, qualifying students may receive 1 laptop only. After applying, please watch the students district email for communications.

Receiving your computer:

You will receive an email to the students Office 365 email account, and a personal email account if we have an accurate email account on file for the student. Recipients must have received an email confirming their pickup date and time to receive a computer. If the student is not able to pick up the computer on the specified date, they may have a family member or friend pick it up for them. Please give the family member or friend written permission to pick it up for you on your behalf.


Computers are picked up directly from the TEch4Kids program location at Foss High School, and can only be picked up during the specified times stated in the email received. This is a student run program, and we are limited to the program dates and time for pickup services.


When applying you must sign into the application using the STUDENTS username (studentID#@tps10.org) and password. You must complete the application for each child separately, using their student login for each student. Using the same student ID to sign in for multiple students will result in the subsequent applications being rejected. Please contact your child's school if you do not know their student username and password.
All communications will be sent to the students TPS email account (studentID#@tps10.org). If you have not received an email within 1 week verifying the receipt of the application, please contact Sherri Desseau.

Ever wonder what happens to old TPS computers?

Normally, when older computers are replaced by newer ones, the old equipment is sent to surplus. Instead, here's what happens now through the Tech4Kids program:

  • Students in Career and Technical Education classes at Tacoma high schools refurbish and repair the equipment.
  • These machines get new Windows 7 operating systems, purchased by the Foundation for Tacoma Students, along with some other software.
  • This refurbished equipment is then ready to be granted to students enrolled in our district.

Current Models of computers:

Models of laptops/computers vary depending on availability. The Laptops2Kids program was designed to provide computers to middle and high school students, better providing them the tools they need, and to make the ultimate goal of graduation. Priorities for computers go to students grades 9-12, followed in order by middle school and elementary students.  Students must be currently enrolled in Tacoma Public Schools, and qualify for free/reduced lunch or meet the federal poverty guidelines - and must not have previously received a laptop though this program. 

We do not have the means for student to request a specific model.

We will also be adding desktop computers to the offerings during the 2017-18 school year. Once we begin production of desktop units, and due to the limited number of laptops available, students in grades K-5 will be more limited in options. Elementary families with receive 1 computer per household. If the family has wired internet access in their home, they will receive a desktop computer; complete with computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse and power cord. It will be the family's responsibility to provide an internet cable. Middle and High school students with wired internet access in the home can opt for a desktop computer if they prefer.

Tacoma students can apply for a laptop by submitting an application form on the website www.tacomaschools.org/laptops2kids. You can access the website from any computer, including computer kiosks in school offices.

Schedule:

Computers will be available for pickup from Foss HIgh School approximately once a month. Emails with driving instructions and specific dates and times for pickup will be sent to the student's TPS email account approximately 1 week before the available date. Pickup times will all be on a Wednesday, between 4:00-6:00 PM.

I want one! Do I qualify?

There is an application for interested students. Students must be currently enrolled in Tacoma Public Schools, and qualify for free/reduced lunch or meet the federal poverty guidelines and must not have previously received a laptop. Students must use their Student ID and password when logging in to apply.

Warranty Information:

Laptops/Computers will be repaired or replaced at the district's discretion within 2 weeks of receipt by the student if the laptop is not functioning (example: will not power on, charger not working, keyboard issues, overheating). Issues related to virus or malware are not covered. Contact Sherri Desseau at sdessea@tacoma.k12.wa.us within 2 weeks if the laptop is not functioning. After 2 weeks, there are no warranties.  The computer is provided to you on an as-is condition.  You are responsible for any and all cost of repairs when needed. 

The Tech4Kids program CANNOT help with or replace laptops or computers for pin or password issues. Please be sure and write down any passwords you set during the setup process or after.
