Q: When does Summer Learning Registration Open?

A: Depending on the program. Starting as soon as January for Kindergarten Jump Start.  Most other programs start registration on March 1st. Watch for dates posted on Summer Learning webpage. If you do not see a date for the program you are looking for please email

Q: When does Summer Learning start?

A: The start date is dependent on the program. Starting as soon as June 25th for those students that need credit retrieval while other programs start later.  Dates are posted on Summer Learning webpage. If you do not see a date for the program you are looking for please email


Q: Does it cost to participate in Summer Learning?

A: No, Tacoma Public School summer programs are offered FREE to those students who are currently enrolled, or will be enrolled, in the Tacoma Public School District.


Q: Do I have to register my student for Summer Learning?

A: Yes, the online registration form will open March 1st and will be available on the Summer Learning website for district wide programs like Reading Camp. Other programs' registration is handled by the hosting school. 


Q: After I have returned the registration form, how will I know if my student is enrolled?

A:   After you have submit the form you should receive one or more of the following: a letter in the mail, a phone call from the school or an email. It will provide you with details regarding the program and other needed information.  If you do not receive any communication please contact the summer learning office


Q: How do I know if my student is eligible to attend summer school?

A: We offer a number of programs geared specifically toward individual student need. Teachers and schools identify students and send invitations. As a parent, if you see a program you think your child would benefit from but have not received an invitation contact your school or the program for more information.


Q: Will Breakfast and Lunch be provided?

A: The Tacoma Public Schools Nutrition Services Department, in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture, will sponsor the Summer Food Service Program for Children. All Children enrolled or not enrolled and all ages 1 through 18 can get a Free Breakfast and Lunch at specified locations when the Summer Food Program is in session. Q: How are the health and medical needs of my student addressed during Summer School?

A: You will need to identify any health concerns for your student in the online registration form. Our nursing staff will review and provide the appropriate support.  

The Parent/Guardian is responsible for providing the required medication to designated program staff on the first day of summer school. Medication currently held at the school must be picked up prior to end of the regular school year, summer school staff will not have access to medications from the regular school year.


Q: What is the emergency protocol for the schools that are participating in Summer School Programs?

A: All schools that are participating in Summer School have been trained for emergency procedures. Our Safety and Security staff will have security staff available to all programs. For more information feel free to visit the website for Safety and Security.
