What can I do?

Tips to support your child’s learning and assessment

1. Become familiar with the state standards specific to your child’s grade level with the national PTA parent guides and OSPI's Your Child's Progress guide.

2. Monitor your child’s progress with school work and ask teachers for activities to do at home to help prepare for tests and improve proficiency.

3. Explore the practice tests.

4. Explain to your child that the tests are designed to help them succeed after graduation.

5. Provide a quiet, comfortable place for studying at home and make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep before a test day.

PTA parent guides

The national PTA’s Parents’ Guides to Student Success were developed by teachers, parents and education experts in response to state standards. Created for grades K-8 and high school English language arts and math, the guides provide clear, consistent expectations for what students should be learning at each grade in order to be prepared for college and career.

The guides include:
• Key items children should be learning in English language arts and math in each grade.
• Activities that parents can do at home to support their child's learning.
• Methods for helping parents build stronger relationships with their child's teacher.
• Tips for planning for college and career (high school only).
