You may also want to look at the Tacoma Public Schools Parent Resource Handbook (pdf) for more information.

Returning families, please refer to this page at the beginning of the year for updated changes to the handbook.

Here are some immediately pertinent excerpts:

Attendance

Regular and punctual attendance is important to your child’s progress.  According to Washington State law, students six years of age and older and their parents are responsible for ensuring the student’s daily attendance.  Please help your child develop good attendance habits.  Frequent tardies and absences can contribute to difficulties in learning and create emotional strain for students.

Homework

Homework is not new learning, homework is Practice of what your child has already been taught either the day of assignment or prior to the day of assignment.  The staff at Jennie Reed supports the belief that students who are assigned homework and complete the work grow and achieve faster.  We also believe that assignments provide a useful extension of the regular day.  Homework provides the students with opportunities to develop independence, self-discipline and responsibility.

Classroom teachers will provide written communication to parents about the expectations for classroom homework.  If you have questions concerning your child's homework, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.  If a parent is not satisfied with results from contacting the classroom teacher, please contact the Principal, Mr. Johnston or our Dean of Students, Mr. Semon.

School Centered Decision Making

The Jennie Reed SCDM is comprised of the Principal, Dean of Students, Teachers, Specialists, Classified Staff members and Parents.  They are responsible for guiding the School Improvement Plan, deal with issues relating to student achievement, staff development and grant proposals.  SCDM meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month and are open to the public. If you are interested in attending, contact the Principal or Dean of Students.
