How we're doing

To measure progress toward meeting the School Board’s strategic goals, we use a set of benchmarks that let parents and community members track our progress. It’s like a report card for our school and the whole district.

Welcome to Point Defiance Elementary

Greetings Point Defiance Families,

Welcome to our world class elementary at the tip of Tacoma. Point Defiance is a vibrant school community that is focused on the success and achievement of every child! We believe in the potential of all students, from our youngest Head Start students to our 5th graders on the cusp of middle school. Point Defiance students are happy, healthy, hopeful, and confident learners.

I consider it an honor to serve our community as Pt. Defiance’s Principal. I am raising my own family in Tacoma and I am fully invested in developing high quality schools, community programs, school-community partnerships, and creating supports for all kids from birth to adulthood. It is my belief that all families are empowered to create successful pathways for their children when these community supports are accessible. In short, we can do this better than it has ever been done before when schools and communities come together to support every family.

We have an excellent team of teachers who collaborate frequently to plan and deliver rigorous and engaging learning experiences in every classroom, every day. Our teachers align instruction to priority standards to keep our efforts focused and to leverage depth and endurance in the learning experiences we are creating. We use DRA, i-Ready, and SBA as measures of academic growth and achievement. It is our goal that all students and parents are clear about these measures, what they mean, and how our students can improve through efforts in the classroom and at home.

Tacoma is also the home of The Whole Child Initiative. We are proudly committed to creating an environment where all children feel successful. Social Emotional Learning and teaching students self efficacy are critically important elements of our program at Point Defiance. Whether it is a metacognitive strategy for emotional regulation that is taught in a song to kindergarteners or straight talk with 5th graders about the power of choices, we know that taking care of the whole child will lead to success! As a principal and parent in our community I will confirm that focusing on the whole child is right for kids!

Parents are critical partners in the work at our school. I want to invite all parents to get involved in some way. If you can volunteer with your child’s teacher, in our cafeteria, on the playground, or you have some feedback that will help us improve, we want to hear from you. In order to make our culture of success and achievement for every child a reality we will need your help!

Let’s make this another great year for our kids. Do not hesitate to email or call me with questions or concerns.
