Community invited to explore new Wainwright school Jan. 25

1/19/2017 | TACOMA, Washington

Explore the new Wainwright Intermediate School on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 130 Alameda Ave., in Fircrest. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with a brief welcome ceremony at 6 p.m. Self-guided tours will follow until 7:30 p.m.

Wainwright is one of 14 schools being remodeled or replaced thanks to a $500 million construction bond voters approved in 2013. The new 64,000-square-foot school is designed to address both students’ social and educational needs in a flexible learning environment.

Opening experience highlights include:
  • A short welcome ceremony begins at 6 p.m. Special music provided by Wainwright Intermediate School and Foss High School students.
  • Ask the architect. You can find architect Noah Greenberg of DLR Group in the Wainwright library from 6:30 to 7 p.m. to talk about what went into the design of the new school.
  • Touch, draw, and wiggle. Many learning spaces will be open for exploration, demonstrations, and even some hands-on activities. Science teacher Deanne Crichton will show off her new second-floor science space while John Armstrong of Open Arts Studio takes over the first-floor DaVinci Lab with an art activity to showcase this special “maker space.” Community members can also try out classroom touch screens and “wiggly chairs.”
  • Take a walk down memory lane on the third floor where you’ll find the old Wainwright wildcat statue, past yearbooks, and other historical displays. Alumni and new families are invited to join the Potters, a fourth-generation Wainwright family, to share about Wainwright’s past, present and future.
Please RSVP to Tacoma Public Schools Planning & Construction at 253-571-3500 or

Please note that parking is very limited. Carpooling and walking are encouraged. The small front parking area is reserved for drop-off and vehicles with handicapped placards and plates.
