Summer in the hot shop yields beautiful glass art

TPS, Hilltop Artists team up for youth glassblowing program

There’s no summer break for Team Production, a partnership between Tacoma Public Schools and Hilltop Artists. The program focuses intensely on the fine art of glassblowing for advanced glass arts students in the hot shop at Jason Lee Middle School.

The tuition-free program for youth, ages 14-20, operates year-round, creating glass art for commissions – such as the Governor’s Arts and Heritage Awards and Tacoma City of Destiny Awards – and for sale in the Hilltop Artists gallery and at events.

Team Production students also become Hilltop Artists ambassadors by helping run glass sales, helping host an annual luncheon, and representing the organization at community events. All Production students are required to create a high school or post education plan, and engage in service-learning projects, such as cleaning the neighborhood.

The innovative program engages youth in challenging creative work while ensuring they are able to stay in school and graduate, and are connected to needed services, like housing, medical, and job search assistance.
