Response to Connecticut school shooting

12/14/2012 | TACOMA, Washington

Many of you have already heard the tragic news about the shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the students, staff and families of those involved in this horrendous event. We will continue to think of them during this difficult time.

Tacoma Public schools in partnership with the Tacoma Police Department have safety guidelines that are in place to ensure our schools are safe and secure. With the news of today’s sad event, schools across our district are reviewing our security guidelines and staff is on alert to watch out for any unexpected behaviors. Please know that the safety of our students, staff and visitors is of primary concern at all of our campuses. In an effort to monitor our community, we are staying in close contact with the Tacoma Police Department and our neighboring school districts.
Sometimes such events can cause a cascading effect on us emotionally, especially if we have had other recent traumas in our lives. If any students feel distressed about the events during the past week, please feel free to contact their school principal or counselor. Services are available to help your student through these difficult issues.
Again, know that we are here to support you and keep our students safe. Our schools will remain in a state of higher alert throughout the rest of the holiday season.
