Tacoma Public Schools has hired Christopher Williams as Chief Operating Officer.

Williams is currently the Executive Director of Facilities/Operations for Chicago Public Schools, the nation's third-largest school district. He supports 883 buildings, including schools, offices, warehouses, stadiums and health clinics in a district with more than 380,000 students and 36,000 employees.

"Christopher Williams has the values and experience that make him a perfect fit for Tacoma Public Schools," said Tacoma Public Schools' Superintendent Carla J. Santorno. "He prioritizes student achievement, he has a strong understanding of how to organize a positive work culture and he shares our focus on using data to guide decisions."

Some of Williams' accomplishments in Chicago include:

  • Leading preparations and negotiations on the largest integrated facilities management contract for a K-12 school district in U.S. history
  • Increasing customer and principal satisfaction by 31 percent on a $260 million custodial contract by implementing new operational processes and focusing on key performance indicators
  • Leading a project that consolidated 2 million square feet of space, saving the district $2 million annually

"I was completely impressed by the overall vision of the district and commitment to academic excellence," Williams said. "Tacoma Public Schools has made extraordinary increases in student graduation rates and become one of the most innovative school districts. That is a direct reflection of the staff and community. I share and admire that vision."

The TPS School Board approved Christopher's hire at its meeting May 11. He will begin work at TPS August 7.
