Happiness is a warm coat

Operation Warm brings winter coats to kids at McCarver

2/7/2017 | TACOMA, Washington

Happiness is a warm coat. Just ask 460 students at McCarver Elementary, who each received a new coat on Friday, Feb. 3.

The donation of coats comes from Avery Bradley, a professional basketball player who grew up in Tacoma. He attended Bellarmine Preparatory School and has fond memories of playing basketball at Al Davies' Boys & Girls Club.

"I'm aware of how cold it is this time of the year, so I wanted to team up with Operation Warm to give (Tacoma children) a chance to have a fun experience of not only receiving some amazing coats, but feeling more confident about going to school, more excited about going to school, and being warm while doing it."

"I knew that if I ever got an opportunity to give back and put a smile on kids' faces in the area of Tacoma, I would take full advantage of the opportunity and give back to the community."

Volunteers from the Tacoma Fire Department and the University of Washington/Tacoma helped distribute the coats during a school assembly at McCarver.

The event was organized by Operation Warm, a national nonprofit focused on increasing self-esteem, school attendance and outdoor play for children in need during the chilly winter months. Since its founding in 1998, Operation Warm has distributed more than two million winter coats to schoolchildren across the country.
