Love Tacoma. Sign up to serve kids in our city. Dedicated volunteers can mentor and inspire students and provide new opportunities beyond what schools can.
This is the road map that drives our work to ensure the success of Every Student. Every Day.
See how we're doing
Every student is an individual with unique talents, learning styles and needs. Tacoma Public Schools offers highly capable services to K-12 to students who perform, or show the potential of performing, at high intellectual levels when compared with others of their age and experience. Highly capable children are present in all student groups, regardless of gender, disability, English language proficiency, economic status, ethnic or cultural background. There are approximately 600 K-12 students who receive Tacoma Public Schools Highly Capable services.
Summer is here! We trust that you are enjoying the time with your students and have planned some fun activities that provide learning opportunities as well.
We are busy preparing for the 2018-2019 school year and are excited about the opportunity to serve you and your students.
During the summer, we are in the office Monday through Thursday. If you have questions about the program, please contact us.
Remember, the director is available on Tuesday mornings to meet with parents who may have questions about their Highly Capable students.
If a student transferring into Tacoma Public Schools has been identified and serviced as Highy Capable in another district, contact the Highly Capable Office. These students are accepted into our system as soon as we receive the test scores from the other district.
Other transfer students can be tested for Highly Capable before the start of the new school year. Test dates are on August 22, August 29, and September 4.
Testing will take about an hour and parents must remain in the office while testing takes place.
To request a test appointment, call the Highly Capable office at 253-571-1120.
Students must be enrolled in their neighborhood school prior to testing. Elementary schools are closed 1 week after the end of the school year and reopen for enrollment on August 20.
Please note that these testing times are for out-of-district transfers only. Current or previous Tacoma Public Schools students will not be tested at these times.
Education is not the learning of the facts, but the training of the mind to think. Albert Einstein
