Grant Center for the Expressive Arts

Principal's Letter

Grant Families,

I hope that you are enjoying the wonderful weather and time with your kids this summer. School will start in a few weeks and I wanted to catch you up on what is new for the 2016-2017 school year.

Grant will be adding a few new staff members this year. Bryan Johnson is coming from Lister to join Mr. Hungria on the 5th grade team. Bryan started his teaching career at Grant and has experience teaching art integrated lessons. He will be a great addition to the Grant family! Grant will be increasing from a half-time to full-time counselor! Barry Miller is an experienced Tacoma counselor and will be at Grant 5 days a week. Welcome Barry! A big part of what makes Grant a great school is the adults that work with your kids. I will keep you updated to any changes or additions to the Grant family.

For the last two years, Grant has been focusing on "The Grant Way," or how we interact with our school community. We talk about this using our four "Be" statements; Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be Kind. This year we are expanding this concept by exploring the art and culture of Native American communities in our area. This will be an exciting intersection of Grant's Art focus and our focus on being respectful of others. We will begin by asking students to share and recognize their own culture and how they contribute in a unique way to our community.

Grant will be working towards a more "paperless" system this year. As much as possible, we will be using electronic communication. This is not only more environmentally responsible, but it also saves money that could be better spent on kids and classrooms! We will be using "Peach Jar", Grant's website, email, and Facebook as much as possible for school communications. We will be surveying families to ensure that we are all covering all methods of communication; but our goal is to reduce as much as possible printing and mailing costs.

Grant has a vibrant PTA that not only supports and funs the arts, but is also the foundation of many of the community events that take place at Grant. The PTA sponsors events from the September Ice Cream Party to the June Family Dinner; and everything in between! They have a low pressure philosophy and make it easy to find a way to be involved. The first opportunity to connect will be the Ice Cream Party on September 7th at 3:30 PM. Come and enjoy some ice cream and find out about how to be involved with our wonderful PTA!

Bringing all the school supplies on the first day of school can be a hassle. Check out the supply list for your teacher and drop off your supplies early. Teachers will be available on August 31st from 3:45 to 5:15 for families to drop off supplies and say "hello" to your new teacher. This will be a "meet and greet," a more detailed introduction to classroom routines and curriculum will be on September 15th for K-4, and September 22 for 5th Grade.

Grant always has a full calendar of fun and educational events! We will do our best to keep you informed of the latest activities. Listed below are the upcoming fall events. Watch for updates from Peach Jar and the Grant website. It is going to be an awesome year and I look forward to meeting all of you very soon!
