Kindergarten Registration

Important dates & information

  • Kindergarten registration opens January 15, 2020

    • We encourage families to complete registration by March 1, this helps ensure we hire the right number of staff for each school

  • Priority deadline for choice enrollment is March 1, 2020

  • Kindergarteners are 5 years old before September 1

How to enroll

  • Create an account: Parents/Guardians create an account with Tacoma Public Schools online system called PowerSchool. Current Preschool families or those with older students may already have an account.
  • Submit an online enrollment form: New registration is NOT needed for current TPS Preschool students. For all new students a separate registration form is required. You may save your progress and your family information will auto-populate in sibling applications. We encourage families to complete registration by March 1, this helps ensure we hire the right number of staff for each school.

    • Required documents can be uploaded or brought to your student's school
      • Two documents showing proof of address – i.e. utility bill, rental agreement or mortgage.
      • For Kindergarten students a birth certificate or other document to verify age.
      • Proof of immunizations.

Current Preschool Families

Many preschool students are NOT enrolled in their neighborhood school. If you attend a non-neighborhood preschool and want to stay for kindergarten a Choice Application is required. Without a choice application, your student will be automatically enrolled into your neighborhood school.

About choice enrollment (K-12)

Students are assigned a neighborhood school based on their home address. Choice enrollment is applying to attend a school other than your neighborhood school. The choice enrollment process is separate from the student enrollment process. Acceptance is dependent on building capacity, seats at various grade levels and program availability. Families are encouraged to explore their neighborhood school options along with choice options. Choice Applications (K-5) are due March 1.

Kindergarten Early Entrance

Kindergarten early entrance screening is available for children turning 5 between September 1 and October 31. Eligibilty is based on a child's readiness for kindergarten. We conduct an objective evaluation of academic skills, language development, physical coordination and social maturity.  Children meeting entry standards will have a four-week trail period at the beginning of the school year and the final decision will be determined by their teacher and principal.

  • Kindergarten early entrance screening is available for children turning 5 between September 1 and October 31 and reside within the Tacoma School District.
