(Gifted and Talented Education) program, is a branch of the
Tacoma Public School's Highly Capable program. It is a mulit-age gifted program
for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who stay with the same teacher for all
three years as they develop a supportive community of learners.
The program recognizes giftedness from a broad perspective to
include those students who are cognitively gifted, academically gifted,
artistically gifted, show strong leadership skills, or for those who have been
identified as underachieving but gifted.
The program provides opportunities for acceleration, curriculum
compacting, and enrichment. While the district curriculum materials are used,
supplemental materials are widely integrated.
Applications for the GATE program are available in late April
and decisions are made by mid-May. If you know of a child who might benefit
from this program, please contact the Downing office at 571-7100.
