Artificial Intelligence

Tacoma Public Schools empowers students and educators to use AI tools in ways that enhance learning, inspire creativity, and prepare students for college, careers, and civic engagement. The use of AI in the classroom prepares students to become responsible digital citizens in a fast-changing world.

Starting Oct. 20, Copilot and Colleague AI available to most secondary students

TPS students will have access to two AI tools starting Oct. 20. Microsoft Copilot will be available to students in grades 8-12. This tool is a chatbot available in the Edge internet browser on student laptops and helps students with research, writing, and problem-solving while maintaining academic integrity standards. Colleague AI is available to students in grades 6-12 and is a tool set up by the classroom teacher to provide learning and tutoring support.

AI tools in the classroom

Artificial Intelligence is used across many platforms in the district to support learning, creativity, and productivity. The following is a summary of applications and/or tools that are available to students:

  • Microsoft Copilot: Chatbot available in the Edge browser.
  • Colleague AI: Tool that provides learning and tutoring support for students.
  • Canva: Tools such as Magic Write, Magic Studio, Magic Design, and Magic Media
  • Nearpod, Flip, Kami, and Clipchamp: AI features for creating questions, assignments, videos, and more.
  • Search engines like Google also use AI to deliver smarter search results, autocomplete suggestions, and personalized recommendations.

AI is now integrated into daily tools - not just chatbots - assisting students and staff to work more efficiently and creatively.
