Trauma-Sensitive Practices

Trauma-Sensitive Practices begin with an understanding of how trauma impacts our brains, learning and behavior.

Educators think about what student behavior may be telling them with a trauma-sensitive approach. And they reflect on their teaching practices to find ways to better support students who may be experiencing trauma.

The core of Trauma-Informed classrooms:

  • Creating a safe, predictable environment
  • Building relationships and a feeling of connectedness
  • Teaching SEL skills in advance to help with emotion regulation (for students and staff)
