Description: Small Business of Art - courses explores how artistic practice can intersect with concepts of commerce and professional engagement. Students continue to develop their fine skill development and conceptual understanding of design, production, and presentation as they consider the ways artists share their work with broader audiences. Emphasis is placed on the processes involved in creating and presenting artwork in a variety of contexts, with attention to how creative decisions relate to goals, audiences, and materials. Students examine how ideas evolve from concept to object to offering, responding to the shifting roles of artist, maker, and entrepreneur. Through hands-on projects, reflective practice, and exploration of artistic intention, students expand their ability to navigate creative and professional challenges. They also consider the cultural, social, and practical aspects of presenting work in both traditional and nontraditional settings. Prerequisite: None.

Description: Visual Arts—Comprehensive courses enable students to explore one or several art forms (e.g., drawing, painting, two- and three-dimensional design, and sculpture) and to create individual works of art. Initial courses emphasize observations, interpretation of the visual environment, visual communication, imagination, and symbolism. Courses cover the language, materials, media, and processes of a particular art form and the design elements used. Courses encourage students to refine their skills while also developing their own artistic styles following and breaking from traditional conventions.
