Application to Attend a Non-Neighborhood School

Parents/guardians may apply for their student to attend a school that is not their assigned neighborhood school. Acceptance for non-neighborhood school enrollment is dependent upon building capacity, seats at various grade levels and program availability. Families are encouraged to explore their neighborhood school options.

Non-Resident Admissions Application

Families who live outside of the Tacoma Public Schools boundaries can request approval to attend a TPS school by completing the Non-Resident Admissions Application process.

Families must complete a form located on the OSPI Choice Transfer Request Portal for any new application and each school year if admitted to TPS.

Follow the steps below for the school year you wish to enroll in TPS.

2025-26 School Year

  1. Submit an OSPI Choice Transfer Request.
  2. Once the OSPI release has been obtained, fill out an enrollment form in ParentVUE

Interested families will apply in ParentVUE by submitting a New Student Enrollment for 2025-2026 that includes the Non-Resident Admission Form.

School Transfer Request

This option is open from June – May annually. The transfer of Tacoma resident students from one TPS school to another school that is not their neighborhood school is determined by building capacity, seats at grade levels, and program availability.  Families are encouraged to communicate with their current school principal before applying for a transfer.  Students must be enrolled in Tacoma Public Schools before requesting to transfer, and students must attend their current school while the transfer is being determined.  If the transfer is granted, it will take effect at the beginning of the next grading period.

The School Transfer Request is available in ParentVUE beginning on June 2, 2025, for the 2025-2026 school year.

Proof of Residency

If you are sharing a home with another individual or family within the district’s boundary, a Proof of Residency form is required along with any two proofs of residency from above with the homeowner/lease holder’s name and address.

Release to Attend Another District

  1. To attend school in a non-resident district, the resident district must first release the student to start the transfer process. Whether you are wishing to attend another school in another district, pursue a G.E.D., or some other path to high school completion, or seeking a renewal for a previously granted release, please complete a request through the Choice Transfer Request via the Washington State Choice Transfer Request Portal (CTRP). When you have completed your application through the CTRP, your request will be sent to the Enrollment Services team for review.
