OPPORTUNITY FILLED - Bryant Neighborhood Center - Tutoring
OPPORTUNITY FILLED - Bryant Neighborhood Center - Tutoring. The Trinity Afterschool Program (TAP) is the literacy tutoring program of the Bryant Neighborhood Center - a community hub that links residents with high-quality resources where young minds learn and grow, relationships are formed, and basic needs are met while amplifying residents’ vision for the community. TAP provides a safe and caring place where early elementary students learn and grow in their abilities, accomplishments, and outlook on life through one-on-one literacy tutoring.
The What
The Trinity Afterschool Program (TAP) is a social-emotional literacy program that pairs 1st-3rd graders who are referred to the program by teachers from Bryant Montessori. One-on-one tutoring is Monday-Wednesday; Thursday is group activity day. The goal is to help each student read at grade level by the time they graduate from the program.
The Why
The Hilltop Neighborhood of Tacoma exemplifies the positive and negative effects of gentrification. Many neighbors have been displaced by rising property costs, yet many of the children and youth we serve are considered vulnerable or at-risk due to poverty, lack of resources, family instability, or other life circumstances. TAP helps early elementary students read better, in a caring and supportive environment, to help them gain more self-confidence in their abilities, their imaginations, and in their outlook on life.
The Where
TAP meets in the Bryant Neighborhood Center (BNC) Mondays-Thursdays, 4:00-5:00 pm on the lower level of the historic Trinity Presbyterian Church located at 1619 6th Avenue, Tacoma, WA 98405.
The When
TAP goes from mid-October through mid-June. Tutors volunteer mostly on Mondays-Wednesdays, 4:00-5:00 pm, although there are some opportunities on Thursdays. We accept new tutors throughout the school year.
