New field investments on the Eastside

In an exciting and first-of-it’s-kind partnership with Street Soccer USA and the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, sponsored by Visa, Tacoma Schools is installing two new soccer fields that will be programmed during 2026 World Cup festivities and available to the community and Tacoma Schools after the games. The field has been designed to accommodate blind players.

The fields are being built on the southeast side of the site of the former Gault Middle School and will not impact design and construction of the future IDEA school

The fields will be completed and ready for use by June 2026 as Tacoma-Pierce County welcomes the FIFA World Cup Festival. The community can expect to see construction beginning at the end of March.

Long-term, we are talking with Parks Tacoma about future use and management of the field as a community asset.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Gault Middle School, built in 1926 at 1115 East Division Lane in Tacoma, was closed in 2009 due to declining enrollment in the district.

In December 2023, the City of Tacoma approved demolition and the district planned to demolish the former school. Demolition was scheduled for February 2024 but the building was destroyed by arson at the beginning of January 2024.

The west side of the site will be the site of the new IDEA High School.
