Music

We, Tacoma Public Schools, believe students benefit from access to a K-12 system of Music education.

Every student in the district has the opportunity to engage in Music learning where instructional practice is aligned with the TPS Culturally Responsive Practices, the K-12  Instructional Music Framework, and Priority Standards.

Students have access at their school to: General Music (K-5) and Orchestra, Band, or Choir (Middle and High School). Schools that would like to make a shift from this approach complete a Programmatic Waiver Request that is reviewed and considered by the Office of the Superintendent and K – 12 Support. Once approved, these waiver requests are made public to affected TPS families.

Students have the opportunity to learn General Music from endorsed Elementary Music Specialists whenever possible. In case where it is not possible, schools must submit a Programmatic Waiver Request to the Office of the Superintendent and K-12 Support.

Students have the opportunity to engage in aligned efforts with the community’s many resources that provide exposure to Music and the Arts beyond the core school programming expectations outlined above.   Students are able to explore traditional and non-traditional Music and Arts opportunities through extended Beyond the Bell/extra-curricular programming. Offerings include instrumental and vocal music and cultural dance experiences such as Asian Drumming, Folklorico and Hip Hop dancing.
