Our community is our priority

Our Community is our priority.

The Tacoma Public Schools Community Inclusion Commitment supports local businesses, inclusivity and career paths for young adults. The first of its kind in the state, this plan directs contractors working on construction or maintenance projects in Tacoma to partner with the district by contributing to the following goals:
  • Support local firms by increasing the local share of total construction to 30 percent.
  • Expand opportunities for women- and minority-owned businesses and small businesses by including at least 10 percent minority business enterprises, 6 percent woman-owned business enterprises and 5 percent small business enterprises.
  • Create career path opportunities for young adults by promoting and enforcing the use of apprenticeships on all projects.

These goals were created by a community task force involving the district, the Pierce County Building & Construction Trades Council, the Black Collective, the A. Philip Randolph Institute and the NAACP 253 Tacoma Branch.
