The new Arlington Elementary recently earned an Award of Merit and high praise from the American Institute of Architects. Arlington's new design features flexible classroom spaces designed with three separate learning areas to give students a choice in the type of learning space that works for them.
"This is a complete package that rethinks the concept of learning environments beyond the traditional classroom," judges said. "The care that went into design and planning, as well as the incorporation of research implementation is innovative and praiseworthy."
Mahlum designed the building, which was funded by a $500 million school construction bond approved by voters in 2013.

mind the weather - Arlington students are in their happy place now that their
playground is complete, along with the rest of their new school. Students
brought their own ideas into the design, including the slides on the hillside
and a small stage area for recess performances.
You might like to see what the evening looked like! It included an Arlington Concert Choir performance, rousing remarks from Principal Wendy Pye-Carter, coloring tiger masks and a look inside the 1994 Arlington time capsule.
Arlington Elementary sits on a 5.9-acre site in South Tacoma. The new school is approximately 54,000 square feet, compared with the original 38,000-square-foot building. Features include a library that also serves as the school's commons area and a community space, and courtyards adjacent to its classrooms. The playground incorporates students' favorite grassy hill into its play spaces.
