Climate Survey: Engagement

Climate Survey: Engagement

The percentage of responses from staff members and the number of responses from family members at each level of the climate survey regarding sustained family and community engagement.

Family & Community Engagement

Families/parents and schools work together in a culture of shared leadership & responsibility for student success. When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher-level programs.

Benefits Parent & Family Engagement:

  • Parents and families increase in knowledge, skill, and ability to help their students succeed in school.
  • Students receive encouragement and support from families that lead to academic achievement.
  • Parents know, understand and reinforce school and District goals and benchmarks (indicators of student success)
  • Increased number and diversity of families engaging with school staff inside/outside the school day.
  • Increased and diverse parents and family volunteers at schools.

Update: Student data was included in the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan. The Tacoma School Board deleted student data as a metric in the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.

Understanding the data

The benchmark displays the percentage of staff responses and the count of family member responses in each category for questions related to engagement. Because a school year includes two calendar years, such as 2019-2020, the school year on the benchmark chart is identified by the second calendar year. For example, the 2019-2020 school year is identified as 2020 on the chart. The data can be viewed by district, region, school, and race. The student data can be further filtered by gender, English Language Learner status, free and reduced lunch status, special education status, and race. Parent and staff data can be further filtered by gender and race.

Staff responses: Number of responses in a specific category divided by the total number of staff members in the school.
Family Member responses: Number of responses in each category.
