Benchmark

The diversity of our student body, our community and our staff is a strength that benefits our community and should be celebrated. The district welcomes, respects, and values the diversity of its students, parents, staff and the broader community.

The district is committed to fostering a learning environment where diversity is encouraged, and to recruiting and retaining a workforce that reflects the diversity of our students and community. The recruitment of diverse teachers and staff provides all students with a better chance of seeing themselves as part of the education system.

Diversity in education provides all children with the opportunity to learn from others with dissimilar backgrounds and recognizes the value of diversity in all learning environments. It is important that children of all races, cultures, and backgrounds are provided with familiar role models in schools. We are committed to hiring the best employees of all backgrounds who will bring their unique talents and skills into our school system.

Update: Staff data was included in the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan. The Tacoma School Board deleted staff data as a metric in the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.

Understanding the data

The benchmark displays the percentage of student responses and the count of parent responses in each category for questions related to diversity on the climate survey.

Because a school year includes two calendar years, such as 2019-2020, the school year on the benchmark chart is identified by the second calendar year. For example, the 2019-2020 school year is identified as 2020 on the chart.​​ 

The data can be viewed by district, region, school, and race. The student data can be further filtered by gender, English Language Learner status, free and reduced lunch status, special education status, and race. Parent and staff data can be further filtered by gender and race.

Logic

Student responses: Number of responses in a specific category divided by the total number of students in a specific grade level.
Parent/staff responses: Number of responses in each category.

Data retrieval schedule

The climate survey is conducted annually. The data is loaded into the data warehouse at the end of June.
