Policy No. 6972
Management Support
EMERGENCY OPERATIONS
It is the policy of the Tacoma School District No. 10 that the superintendent or his/her designee shall develop regulations for emergency procedures in order to protect students, staff, visitors, and school district property, and to maintain or restore order to the school environment. Concern for personal safety should take precedence over the protection of property in carrying out any
procedures. Emergency evacuation drills shall be conducted regularly.
In the event an emergency occurs (such as an earthquake, toxic gas leak, fire, volcanic eruption, etc.) and it is not possible to consult with the superintendent or designee, the principal or designee is responsible to determine whether and when students or staff members will be dismissed. Unless there is imminent danger to students, school officials will retain custody of students under emergency circumstances until students can be safely released to their parent(s) or guardian(s) under the direction of the principal or designee.
The superintendent or designee shall prepare a district emergency preparedness program to assure the safe operation of the district in an emergency.
