Local firms Absher and BCRA team to design-build new Hunt Middle School

The Tacoma School Board selected the team of Absher Construction and BCRA Design to design and build the new Hunt Middle School.

Absher led the now-completed Wilson High School modernization, and BCRA is designing the new Boze Elementary School.

Hunt Middle School closed in 2010 and currently functions as one of two transition sites the school district uses to house students during other school construction projects. This year, students from Grant Center for the Expressive Arts attend school at the existing Hunt site while their new school is built.

Project schedule

  • Design: November 2018 - December 2019
  • Construction: January 2020 - June 2021
  • Move in: Fall 2021

Who will attend Hunt?
Tacoma Public Schools conducted a middle school boundary study in 2016 to rebalance overcrowding at Mason and Truman and work in Wainwright Intermediate School when it opened, as well as the future boundary for Hunt.

Elementary
Elementary schools that would feed into the Hunt boundary are all or some portions of Geiger, DeLong, Whittier, Franklin and Jefferson.

Middle
All middle school students entering 8th grade when the new Hunt opens may remain in the same school with the same transportation options.
Incoming 7th graders who are impacted by the boundary change and would like to remain at their current middle school rather than transfer to Hunt may apply through the optional enrollment process and would have first priority in consideration. (In that case, transportation would be arranged by the family.)

Students who live in the Wainwright/Hunt boundary (Wainwright serves grades 4-8) can elect to go to Hunt if they want a more comprehensive middle school experience. Students who want to attend a different middle school altogether can apply through the optional enrollment process.
