Early design of the new Downing Elementary School is in full swing, with school staff and parents meeting with the design-build team of TCF Architects and Korsmo Construction to address needs for the new building.
The design advisory committee (DAC) meets regularly to provide input into the design of the new school, such as floor plans, interior and exterior designs.
After months of collecting ideas and feedback, TCF Architects developed renderings that show the team’s vision of the new Downing. Bright colors, an open and inviting courtyard at the main entrance and wood beam panels in the library are just a few of the details you will find at Downing.
The project will incorporate the existing Boys & Girls Club into the site.
Construction is expected to run from April 2021 to July 2022, with Downing re-opening in fall 2022. Students will attend school in the existing building until the new school is complete.
Downing serves approximately 350 preschool through fifth-grade students in Tacoma's North and West ends. The current building was constructed in 1949, with several additions in the 1950s.
This project is funded by the $535 million school construction bond voters passed in 2020. Thank you, Tacoma voters.
