Public invited to comment on impending sale of Gault to Chaffey Building Group

The Tacoma Public Schools Board of Directors will hear public comment regarding the impending sale of the former Gault Middle School site to the Chaffey Building Group on Thursday, September 22, at the beginning of the regular school board meeting.

The Chaffey Building Group is proposing to redevelop the historic Gault Middle School into housing, and then add additional for-sale and for-rent housing and an urban village mix of retail, to potentially include a small grocery store, restaurant, and other amenities. Early plans also include pedestrian pathways and green space on the site are also included, including community gathering space that could host a farmers’ market. The vision was widely supported by the neighborhood.

The public hearing will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 22, in the fourth-floor auditorium of the Central Administration Building, 601 S. 8th St., Tacoma. Time is subject to change and can be confirmed by calling 253-571-3322.

Written public comment can be submitted via an online form, emailed to, or mailed to Tacoma Public Schools, c/o Alicia Lawver, 3223 S. Union Ave., Tacoma, WA 98407. Written public comment must be received by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Following the hearing, the board will consider a resolution to allow the district to enter into a Purchase & Sale Agreement with the Chaffey Building Group. A previous resolution authorized the district to negotiate the agreement that will be considered on Sept. 22.

If approved, a feasibility period would begin during which time the Chaffey Building Group will conduct its due diligence process to evaluate the feasibility of the project. The Chaffey Building Group would also work with the City to finalize a site plan that would comply with city site development permit requirements, which may include altering zoning restrictions and/or obtaining a Conditional Use Permit or Development Regulation Agreement, as appropriate. That process will include community input.

For more information, go to the Gault web page for more information about the site or the proposal. The resolution and additional information will be posted with the Sept. 22 meeting agenda prior to the meeting on the board webpage.
