The Security bargaining unit team and Tacoma Public Schools (TPS) team have reached a tentative settlement to contract negotiations that began in October 2021. The proposed three-year agreement incorporates structural changes to the Department that reflect the evolving nature of the work and expectations from our community. These modifications include creating two new positions, Campus Support Specialists, with a student behavioral support focus. Additionally, there are adjustments to the former Security Patrol Officer duties as we transition to the new Campus Security Officer II role. Again, there is more of a focus on supporting student behavior and moving away from the more traditional role the positions previously held.
The tentative agreement includes salary increases for the first year of the agreement of 2%, plus a 2% implicit price deflator (IPD). In contrast, the second year of the agreement calls for implementing a new salary schedule that better reflects the new expectations for the positions. This includes IPD at 5.5%, combined with modest salary increases for the new positions of roughly 4.5%. The last year of the tentative agreement calls for IPD alone. Other enhancements to the agreement include updating health insurance and leave language, clarifying hours of work, personnel procedures, and payroll processes.
The District team would like to thank its labor partners for their advocacy and professionalism during this round of negotiations. The bargaining unit is planning to hold its ratification vote in the next couple of weeks, followed by Board approval. An update will follow after those milestones are reached.
