Tacoma Public Schools plans for full-time, in-person instruction for all students for 2021-2022 school year.

TPS plans to offer full time in-person instruction five days per week for ALL students in the 2021-2022 school year – in accordance with current state health and safety guidelines.

Five days of in-person learning won’t necessarily look like it did before the pandemic. For example, current guidance calls for three feet of social distance in some circumstances. We are currently examining what that would look like for staff and students in our schools this fall. As always, the health and safety of students and staff remains our highest priority.

“We have an incredibly strong team of educators in Tacoma Public Schools,” Deputy Superintendent Dr. Josh Garcia said. “They’re looking ahead to the fall, anticipating student needs and creating plans to provide our students a high-quality education next school year.”

Details and additional information will be shared in the coming weeks. Here are a few key highlights:

  • For families who do not want their student to attend school in person, we offer Tacoma Online for grades K-12. Tacoma Online will operate as a stand-alone school for the 2021-2022 school year.  Students enrolling in Tacoma Online will not have any other assigned school as they do this year. Tacoma Online will offer the Running Start Program in partnership with Tacoma Community College for high school juniors and seniors. Interested families can join the 2021-2022 waitlist.

  • Registration is open for next year for grade PreK-12. If you or someone you know hasn’t registered their student for the 2021-2022 school year, now is the time. All enrollment applications are online and available in both English and Spanish.

  • State law does not currently require a COVID-19 vaccination for school entry. However, all individuals 16 and older are now eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine. Providers across the state are working hard to get our communities vaccinated, visit the Department of Health site to find a location. We continue to work closely with health authorities and will make adjustments as guidance changes or new information becomes available. For example, national health officials may soon make vaccines available to younger students.
