District asks public to provide feedback on equity, inclusive language

Tacoma Public Schools is seeking members of the public to apply for a new committee focused on providing the district feedback on inclusive language and equitable practices in its policies.

Members of the Equity Policy Review Team will review new and revised policies and add feedback that represents the Tacoma community. This is a new step in our updated district policy adoption and revision process.

Committee members will attend a one-hour orientation and be provided suggested reading material to get started. The estimated time commitment is one hour per month to review proposed policies and provide feedback.

Each policy review will also include an optional meeting in which team members can learn more about the policy, discuss it with other team members and provide verbal and written feedback.

Ideally, team members will represent diverse groups and perspectives including, but not limited to:

  • African-American
  • Asian
  • LatinX
  • Multi-Racial
  • Native American
  • Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander

Other perspectives:

  • Disability (including neurological or physical)
  • Gender (including identity and expression)
  • LGBTQ+
  • National origin or ancestry
  • Religion affiliation
  • Veteran / Military Community

The Equity Policy Review Team will also include two board members, a student board representative and some Tacoma Public Schools staff members.

Applications are due by Friday, June 4. Apply here.

Equity Policy Review Team members will be announced at the June 24, 2021 board meeting.
