Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Bezos Academy announced today on Instagram that Bezos Academy will open four tuition-free, Montessori-inspired preschool classrooms in Tacoma this fall.
Tacoma Public Schools and the Bezos Academy have signed a memorandum of understanding for the Academy to lease part of the primary school building next to McCarver Elementary School as the location for the preschools.
The non-profit Bezos Academy’s mission is to launch and operate preschools in underserved communities.
“We deeply appreciate and applaud this investment in the children of Tacoma, especially since it will expand access to preschool for families who otherwise couldn’t afford it,” said Superintendent Carla Santorno.
Since the Tacoma School Board of Directors adopted its original strategic plan in 2012, two of the primary goal areas for expansion and investment have been Early Learning and Partnerships.
The announcement by Bezos Academy underscores the value of community partnerships that help our students, particularly our youngest learners, Santorno said.
