August 2020 Athletics Update
Athletics Update August 16, 2020

Tacoma Public Schools has moved the start of high school and middle school athletics to the first week of January 2021. We are working with athletic directors, coaches, and club advisors to design extra-curricular activities that can be done remotely.

More information regarding the new seasons and updated rules regarding participation in high school athletics can be found at www.WIAA.com.

In a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the WIAA Executive Board recently released a modified 2020-21 WIAA sports season calendar. These changes created four WIAA-sanctioned seasons and move girls soccer, girls swimming, volleyball and football, originally scheduled for the fall season, to WIAA Season 3 in the Spring. The fall sports of cross country, golf and tennis remain in Season 1 and are all designated alternate season sports.

Using the guidance provided by Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, Tacoma Public Schools has decided to move WIAA Season 1 Sports to Season 3. The sports of Boys Tennis,  Boys/Girls Golf and Boys/Girls Cross country will be moved to Season 3, which begins in early March. We will continue to follow guidance from the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and work to get our students back on the field, in the pool or on the court.

To clarify questions regarding athletics participation in Tacoma Public Schools, students enrolled in Tacoma Online will be able to participate in extracurricular activities at the high school in which they were enrolled for the 2020-2021 school year. Furthermore, all courses offered by Tacoma Online qualify for NCAA eligibility, as the program will be using Tacoma Public Schools teachers to facilitate Edgenuity courses. Most Edgenuity courses are approved for NCAA courses. You can double-check courses by following the link below and searching "Edgenuity Virtual Academy".
