Thank you, teachers & nurses!

Teacher Appreciation Week collage
Teacher Appreciation Week, May 5-9, 2025

We went straight to the source to hear what students appreciate about their teachers, and they didn’t disappoint. From elementary to high school, Tacoma’s teachers bring a sense of belonging, safety, joy and collaboration to their classrooms. Students feel the commitment and the care – and it shows.

It's Teacher Appreciation Week. We see and value what you do and the impact it makes on every student, every day. Thank you, teachers!

National School Nurse Day, May 7

Thank you, school nursing team!

Thank you, school nursing team!

May 7 is National School Nurse Day, and we are grateful to our school nurses and assistant nurses for the care they provide to our students.

“Our nursing team diligently serves all students - ages 3-22 years old. They work in health rooms, support students at activities and athletics, travel with them on field trips, train staff, and provide life-saving medications and treatments,” said Director of Health Services Shallae Hobbs. “I am proud of the health care they provide and their dedication to our students, staff, and the community.”

Nursing team stats:

  • Collectively, our school nurses have 226 years of experience with TPS
  • One of our nurses has served TPS students for 30 years
  • 19 of our nurses have achieved National Board Certification
  • 40.1% of our students have a diagnosed medical condition
  • Top three chronic health conditions nurses support: Allergies, asthma and ADHD
  • Nurses have supported over 105,000 health room visits across the school district this school year
  • Nurses have performed over 22,854 vision and hearing screenings this school year
  • Our nurses participate in over 60 hours of nursing-specific professional development each year
