2020 Graduations

#TPSGrad20 Virtual Graduations and more . . .

5/14/2020 | TACOMA, Washington

Join us for a historic graduation ceremony unlike any before! We’re excited to celebrate more than 2,000 Tacoma students' high school graduations with friends, family, and the community.

We wish we could be in the same space together, but as we continue to do our part to keep the community safe, we ask that all of Tacoma join us in celebrating our amazing Class of 2020 during this unprecedented public health crisis from your living rooms and back yards.

We’ll broadcast all nine graduations LIVE on Facebook and TV. We invite students, families, past Tacoma Public Schools alum, and community members to join us online to share in these milestone events by sharing your congratulatory messages on the live feeds and with the hashtag #TPSGrad20.

How you can help celebrate our Class of 2020 #TPSGrad20

Graduation Window ArtPersonalized Graduation Window and Yard Celebrations

We encourage you to stay home, stay healthy, and show your community support for our Class of 2020 by decorating your front windows with graduation hats and words of gratitude. You might consider words of encouragement for the many students celebrating during this extraordinary time.

Want to go big!? Decorate your entire yard! The hope is that when your neighbors and our students are out walking their dog or getting a bit of fresh air, they are uplifted by your art and creativity and inspired to create their own window celebrations.

Contribute to our virtual window or yard display by sharing a photo of your creation on social media. Tag @TacomaSchools and use the hashtag #TPSGrad20, or send your photo to info@tacoma.k12.wa.us

Our Public Information Office will collect your cards and randomly distribute them to our high schools to share with students.

Option 2: Fill out the Class of 2020 form linked below and we'll share your messages of congratulations and encouragement in the comments of the graduation ceremony of your choice.

Share Your Video Message to the Class of 2020

We are asking alumni, faculty, staff, fellow students, family members, community leaders, corporate partners and friends of this year’s graduates to record a short video message to share with our graduating Class of 2020. This message can be for students — or for those in specific high schools.

We plan to share the final project on our Tacoma Schools' main social channels during June 1 through 11, when this year’s commencement ceremonies were originally scheduled.

Instructions on Submitting a Video

Please follow the guidelines below.

In your recording, please respond to the following prompts:

  1. Tell us your name as well as your class year and school (if an alum), company, and title (if a corporate partner) or connection to the school. (I.e., Ima Tiger, Class of 2000, Currently enlisted in the U.S. Army)
  2. Tell the graduating class why you’re so proud of them.
  3. Share advice on life after high school and what you love about being a part of your high school.
  4. Mail your video to gradvideo@tacoma.k12.wa.us

Please avoid mentioning COVID-19, and remember to keep your message positive and uplifting.

When taking your video, please:

  • Record your video horizontally.
  • Keep your congratulations to 15 seconds or less.
  • Position yourself facing a window or outside. If there are bright lights on behind you, please turn them off.
  • Look into the lens.
  • Tap your face on the phone so the camera will focus and expose correctly for your face.
  • Leave a little room above your head and aim to include at least your head and shoulders in the frame.
  • Record somewhere with limited background noise, so we can hear you clearly.
  • If possible, or helpful, ask someone to hold the camera for you.
  • Be sure to wear your school colors and show your pride!
