Gault Middle School students honored their veterans on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at a moving assembly produced by staff and students. “That our Veterans Day assembly fell on Election Day was no coincidence” said Principal Delores Beason, who inspired students to be civic-minded.
Retired Col. Willie Stewart, who served on the Tacoma School board and in the Army National Guard, spoke about the deep and rich history of Gault Middle School and his experiences as a veteran (1958–1990). Representing the 25 million veterans honored by this important holiday, Stewart commended the Gault staff and student body for the best Veterans Day assembly he had ever attended at a school, and cited his reasons: the video celebrating staff who served in the armed forces produced by Terese Cuff and her students; the combined McIlvaigh and Gault middle school choirs’ performance led by Kristin Oliver; the dignified color guard and the inspirational atmosphere created by Wilfred Allison, Gault’s ASB director.
Stewart applauded the Gault students who demonstrated respect and character throughout the assembly. Gault’s Assistant Principal Tracy Allen dismissed the students with a guided visualization about character—reinforcing that, at Gault, “Character Counts”. Teachers are always on the lookout for students displaying trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness and caring and on Veterans Day and everyday—citizenship.
The following are Gault staff members who are veterans: Wilfred Allison, Waymon Cruell, Brenda Carr, Booker Crawford, Lisa Hertzog, Russell Phillips III, Rebecca Price and Donna Chang.
