Four students from Tacoma Public Schools were among 13 scholarship recipients honored at an afternoon tea, Saluting Our Scholars,
sponsored by the Tacoma Chapter, The Links, Incorporated. Recipients included 12 graduating high school seniors and one continuing college student.
Tacoma Public Schools recipients:
- Thomas Gerson Carter–Foss High School
- Gabrielle Kara Knight–Lincoln High School
- Myranda Stacia Morris–Stadium High School
- Paris Stephens- Broughton–Lincoln High School
Other students receiving scholarships:
High school counselors and administrators are asked to encourage Tacoma Public Schools students to apply for these scholarships when information arrives at the schools next spring.
The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit corporation, established in 1946. The membership consists of 12,000 professional women of color in 270 chapters located in 42 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. It is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. The local chapter has 37 members.
The Tacoma chapter's program facets are the arts, national trends and services, international trends and services, and services to youth. Under services to youth, the chapter has awarded scholarships for many years.
Last year, the Tacoma chapter awarded $22,000 in scholarships. This year, it awarded $16,000 in scholarships. The members have an annual fundraiser, corporate sponsorship and an ongoing partnership with the Susan Komen Foundation. Scholarship recipients are selected ased on financial need, academic achievement, citizenship, extracurricular activities, community service and an essay related to their research on breast cancer.
