More than 80 Gault Middle School sixth graders will graduate from the Gang Resistance Education And Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program on Monday, Dec. 8, during a special celebration from 1:50 to 2:45 p.m. in the auditorium at Gault Middle School, 1115 E. Division Lane, Tacoma. Each graduate will be awarded a certificate from a Tacoma police officer for his/her participation and completion of the G.R.E.A.T. program, which started at the beginning of the school year.
The G.R.E.A.T. program is a violence prevention curriculum that teaches students important skills to help them avoid gangs, violence, drug abuse and crime. The purpose of G.R.E.A.T. is to help students develop beliefs and practice behaviors that will help them avoid destructive habits.
During the G.R.E.A.T. lessons, students work closely with a G.R.E.A.T. Tacoma police officer, who serves as a mentor and positive role model for the class. Throughout the G.R.E.A.T. program, students have the opportunity to discuss ideas, practice skills they are learning and reinforce reading and writing abilities.
