Foss JROTC unit receives a Distinguished Unit Award

The Foss High School Air Force Junior ROTC unit was one of 328 units out of 879 worldwide selected to receive the 2007-08 Air Force Junior ROTC (JROTC) Distinguished Unit Award—the third year in a row the Foss cadets have earned this award. The award recognizes Air Force JROTC units that have performed above and beyond normal expectations and distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community while meeting the Air Force JROTC mission of producing better citizens for America. The 104 cadets enrolled last school year were under the direction of Maj. James H. Phillips Jr. and Chief Master Sgt. Steve Allen.

“The Distinguished Unit Award recognizes the personal growth and accomplishments of the cadets, the contributions of the instructors as mentors of the cadets and the support of the school and community,” said Col. Richard Ragaller, director of the Air Force JROTC.

The objectives of the JROTC program are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship and life skills; promote community service; instill responsibility, character and self-discipline through character education; and provide instruction in air and space fundamentals. Enrollment is open to all young people in the ninth grade or higher, physically fit and citizens or nationals of the United States.

The Air Force JROTC program, with an enrollment of more than 102,000 cadets, is located in 879 high schools across the United States and at selected schools worldwide.
