Dan Voelpel took over the helm of the district’s Public Information Office on Monday, Dec. 7. Well-known throughout the Tacoma community, Voelpel is an award-winning former newspaper columnist and decorated local government public information professional.
Most recently Voelpel was the economic development director for the city of Puyallup. Other experience includes six years as a business columnist for The News Tribune, a year as an instructor at Pacific Lutheran University teaching public relations/marketing, and more than a decade as community relations manager for the city of Tacoma.
Voelpel’s awards include being named one of the top three business columnists in the United States by The Society of Business Editors and Writers in 2007 and 2008. The Society of Professional Journalists named him Best Business Columnist in the Northwest in 2005 and 2006.
He has also been a keynote speaker for numerous local service and social organization events. Voelpel taught media relations to attendees at the National Recreation and Parks Association annual conference in San Diego and to staff members of the city of Casper, Wyo.
