Committee working on new displacement process meets this week, next week

The Section 83 Committee – a joint committee of administration and teachers union appointees working to develop a new displacement and transfer process for teachers – will continue its work Thursday, Dec. 1; Friday, Dec. 2; and Thursday, Dec. 8.

The nine-member committee will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday this week at Stafford Elementary School, 1615 S. 92nd St.

All meetings of the committee are open to the public. Guests visitors should check in at the office, will not be required to sign in and will be escorted to the Stafford Conference Room.

The committee will convene again Thursday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tacoma Nature Center, 1919 S. Tyler St.

Background:
During negotiations this summer on a new three-year collective bargaining agreement for teachers, the district and Tacoma Education Association (TEA) agreed to set up the joint committee to develop the displacement and transfer criteria. The agreement calls for the committee to complete its work by May, so the criteria it develops can be used to determine teacher assignments for the 2012-2013 school year.

Committee members include Superintendent-Elect (Interim) Carla Santorno, TEA President Andy Coons as co-chairs; Jeanne Harmon, executive director of the Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession; Derryl Finney, a math teacher at Foss High School; John Prosser, humanities teacher at Giaudrone Middle School; Ann Welton, librarian at Stafford Elementary School; Toni Pace, interim assistant superintendent for K-12 support; Scott Rich, principal at McCarver Elementary School; and Tracy Allen, assistant principal at Baker Middle School.
