Aerospace program deadline is Nov. 7

High school juniors can apply for the Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) program through Nov. 7. WAS encourages students from across Washington to explore the challenges and opportunities awaiting them in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Through the WAS program, students will explore career options in STEM where there is a national shortage in these fields.

WAS provides students opportunities to study a NASA-based curriculum, work with professional engineers and scientists, visit engineering facilities and compete in hands-on engineering challenges. From January to May, students in the WAS program will complete a series of Web-based lessons centering on the history and future of space exploration. There is no cost for the program, and includes travel, meals and lodging.

Select students will be invited to a six-day residential experience in Seattle at the Museum of Flight in June or July. They will design a human mission to Mars under the guidance of professional scientists and engineers.

WAS is also seeking educators from the state to serve as counselors to the summer residency experience. Those teachers selected will receive stipends and are eligible for clock hours. Counselor applications are available on the Museum of Flight’s Web site at www.museumofflight.org/washingtonaerospacescholars.

Check the Museum of Flight’s Web site or call 206.764.5866 for more information. Download a copy of the application and poster.
