Registration Guidelines

The following list of inservice offerings is available to Tacoma staff. Each session indicates if it is available for clock hours or optional day pay, and if there are any restrictions on who may attend. New workshop schedules are published in January, June and September. If you have questions, please call 571-1061.

Registration Procedures
It is the goal of the Professional Development Office to process registrations in the most timely and efficient manner possible. To do this, cooperation is needed in the following:

We value our presenters and their time commitment in offering these professional development opportunities. Please be diligent in notifying the Office of Professional Development and Recruitment immediately if you are unable to attend a class for which you have registered.
All class registrations must be submitted in writing using the registration form found in each flier or by using our new On-Line Registration page.
Registrations will be taken in the order received. All Tech Tuesday and First Aid/CPR classes require a registration fee. The registration fee must accompany your registration form.
Please plan ahead as much as possible to avoid registering the day before or the first day of class.
ONLY mail-in, On-Line or fax-in (1247) registration will be accepted. A registration form is included on the website. Feel free to copy as needed. Blank registration forms are also available in all school buildings. Registrations will not be taken over the telephone. This includes calling to "get your name on the list."
Confirmations will be returned to the participant via school mail. Please do not call to see if a class is full. When a class reaches its maximum, a waiting list will be kept until two days prior to the class. Persons on the waiting list at that time will be notified if there is room in the class.
The Professional Development Office reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet the minimum enrollment requirement. Every effort will be made to notify those who have registered.

Clock Hours

Any certificated staff receiving their continuing certification after August 31, 1987 must complete 150 clock hours of inservice every five years in order to maintain a valid certificate. Tacoma School District is recognized by the state as an inservice provider. When a course is to be offered for clock hours, approval from OSPI is requested by the district. When approval is granted, the course is advertised to certificated staff as having clock hours available. If clock hours are needed, the class instructor must be notified the first night of class so that the necessary form can be provided.
Clock hours can be accumulated and used for advancement on the salary schedule just as college credits have been used in the past. Ten clock hours are equivalent to one college credit.
Inservice registration forms for clock hours will be available at the course if clock hours have been approved. You must apply and pay for clock hours while the class is in session, not later than the second session.
A minimum of three hours of instruction is required in order to receive clock hours (1 hour of instruction = 1 clock hour). Clock hours cannot be authorized for sessions not attended. Example: A class scheduled for 4-6 p.m. for five weeks, the total is $10. If you are absent for one of those sessions, your fee is still $10, but clock hours can only be authorized for 8.
The cost of clock hours is $1/clock hour with a $5 minimum charge.
