Mason Middle School

3901 N. 28th St., Tacoma, WA 98407

Named for Tacoma pioneer Allen C. Mason, Mason Middle School has been a fixture in the Proctor neighborhood since opening classes in February 1926. Beginning in 1995, an eight-year process started that saw the 70-year-old school demolished and rebuilt from the ground up on the same site.

The structural design of the new school expressed some of the same elements of the old building. When the project was completed, the new facility boasted 31 classrooms, a library arcade and a multi-purpose room able to fit almost all 750+ students at the same time.

One of the most important issues in the construction of the new facility was to ensure it featured a sense of continuity and harmony with the surrounding Proctor District. More than just a place of learning, Mason Middle School has been a location that has served the community as a gathering place for night activities when school is not in session. That was kept in mind as the new structure was designed and built.

The new Mason Middle School was completed in August 2003.
