Adequate Yearly Progress

Each year parents are provided with information regarding federal "adequate yearly progress" requirements. In 2009, the Tacoma School District did not reach the state uniform bar standard, and the district continues to be in Step 2 of district improvement. Our district has created a District Improvement Plan that has four primary goals:

  1. Increase achievement for all students each year by 10%.
  2. Decrease the gap between under performing subgroups and the district average performance on the WASL by 10% annually.
  3. Decrease the dropout rate by 10% annually.
  4. Reduce the number of students not graduating by 10% annually.

Tacoma Public Schools teachers and staff have set very strong expectations for themselves and they are working diligently to meet the educational needs of every child. The district is committed to increasing efforts to engage the community and parents in meeting our goals.

Adequate Yearly Progress and Public School Choice

Public School Choice (PSC) is a critical component of NCLB because it offers a student enrolled in a Title I school that is identified for school improvement, corrective action, or restructuring an opportunity to attend a public school that has not been so identified. The following data shows PSC for Tacoma Public Schools.

School Year 2007-08 2008-09 2009-10 2010-11
# of schools offering school choice 7 7 16  21
# of students eligible for school choice 3724 2162 6261  9,200
# of students exercising their right to public school choice 129 19 81  189
# of school buildings offering supplemental educational services 4 2 7  15
