An ecosystem is a natural community.

Wetland ecosystems are transition zones between land and water.
Wetlands have many important functions and values.
People manage and protect wetlands for many reasons.

FOCUS QUESTIONS

1.              What are wetlands?

·        Wetlands are land areas that are covered with water for at least part of the year.

·        Wetlands are identified by certain kinds of soil and specially adapted plants.

·        Wetlands provide habitat for many animals.

·        Wetlands provide drainage control and reservoirs for excess water.

·        There are different types of wetlands.

2.             Why are wetlands important?

·        Wetlands provide flood control.

·        Wetlands help clean the environment.

·        Wetlands recharge groundwater.

·        Wetlands provide habitat for wildlife.

·        Wetlands are managed and protected because of their functions and value.
