Downing Elementary School

Downing Elementary believes in building a community of learners that ensures success for each child, opportunities for growth for each teacher and meaningful involvement for each parent and family. Downing students score above the national district average on reading, math and language tests every year.

5th to 6th Grade Transition

Tacoma School District is the proud recipient of a grant provided by the RAIKES Foundation to support students and families in the transition from 5th to 6th grade in the Mason/Truman region. The RAIKES Foundation is dedicated to the belief that regular participation in high quality programs leads to better personal, social and academic outcomes and higher self-esteem. http://raikesfoundation.org

The focus of the grant for the 2011-12 school year will include:

Implementation of the AVID program in 5th and 6th grades OVERVIEW OF AVID
Strong collaboration between teachers in the Mason/Truman regions
Increased communication with families about successful transition to middle school
