Your school board at work

The school board meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, September through June. In July and August, school board meetings are scheduled once a month.
The meeting, which begins at 6 p.m., usually takes place in the fourth-floor auditorium of the Central Administration Building at 601 South 8th Street in Tacoma and typically lasts one and a half hours.

The agenda for each meeting is available on the district Web site and at the school board meeting. The agenda is typically posted to the Web site the Friday evening before regularly scheduled meetings. To receive the board agenda by mail, please contact the school board secretary at 253.571.1443. All regular board meetings and study sessions are public and everyone is encouraged to attend. Executive sessions are closed to the public. Meeting minutes are not posted until approved by the school board.

Bring your input!

The board will provide time during the discussion of each agenda item for members of the public to comment. At this time, members of the public may address the board on an item not on the agenda. Comments should relate to items of public interest within the board’s jurisdiction. The law prohibits the board from taking action on items not on the agenda. Board members will not normally respond directly to the comments, but speakers are assured that their comments are very important and will be addresssed in a different forum.

School board members encourage public participation. Your input is appreciated. If you would like to address the school board, follow these steps:

Complete a “Citizen’s Request to Speak” card, which is located at the back of the auditorium. Submit the card to the school board secretary PRIOR to the start of the meeting. Cards submitted after the meeting begins will not be considered at that session.
The superintendent will call your name when it is your turn to address the school board. Please speak into the microphone. You will have up to three minutes to share your concern.

(*) Members of the Public Wishing to Address the Board: "The majority of time during the first meeting of the month is primarily reserved for a Board study session. Other business is scheduled to be as minimal as possible to enable the Board to have adequate time to devote to the study topic(s). The Board will engage the public as appropriate to study session topics. Persons wishing to address the Board on other topics will normally be referred to the 2nd meeting of the month, which is the regular business session."

The superintendent and student representatives

As the school board’s chief officer, the superintendent carries out policies and regulations approved by the school board members on management concerns, and is responsible for directing the district’s staff.

The All-City Senate elects two student representatives to the school board each year. These representatives share the ideas and concerns of students attending the district’s high schools.
